Community Futures Planning

Built by you and strengthened by KU

Communities are built over time, and each one has different possible futures. We bring community leaders together to imagine and create a shared vision of the future. Community members gather for cross-sector collaboration and strategic planning that helps turn their vision into actionable steps. Our facilitators use the three horizons framework to help participants envision possible futures and set clear priorities and practical plans for right now and beyond.

Horizon 1

What does now look like?

Looking across the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal landscapes, participants discuss current situations in their community and determine what can change and what can stay the same.

Horizon 2

What should the near future look like?

Participants design the bridge forward with 15% solutions and set goals, strategies, and indicators for right now, 1–3 years, and beyond. Participants also establish monitoring practices through signals of change, likely interferences, and adaptation.

Horizon 3

What should the far future look like?

Participants discuss Horizon 1 elements that they want to change and identify the details of what that change would look like. Horizon 3 focuses on transformation and possible futures.
