Applied Innovations with LaCretia Wooten

The work of the Achievement & Assessment Institute (AAI) and its centers encompass a vast range of services, solutions, and partnerships. In our short interview series, Applied Innovations, we get to know some of the talented members of our team and their projects, across many centers and various areas of impact.

In this edition, we meet LaCretia Wooten, Director of GEAR UP KCK, a program within AAI's Center for Educational Opportunity Programs.

Can You Tell Us a Little About Yourself?

I am a proud mom of 4! I retired with 20 years in the military.  I spent 7 years teaching in the KCMO (KCPS) school district as an elementary teacher.

What Attracted You To Your Field?

Prior to GEAR UP, I was a classroom teacher for 7 years in the KCPS school district where I taught in the elementary schools.  I also served as a training manager for the United States Air Force, Air National Guard. There I assisted members with continuing their post-secondary education.

I saw the opportunity with GEAR UP as the “bridge” to understand how to serve kids K-12 and then into post-secondary education and the military being one of the options.  I enjoy educating and serving underrepresented, low income students and families. GEAR UP was and is an opportunity for me to pour knowledge, love, and guidance, back into the community.

What Populations Do You or Your Center Support?

Our 2024 Grant serves the graduating class of 2030 and 2031 in the Kansas City, Kansas School district. The district is low-income, first generation students

What Are Your or Your Center’s Key Projects?

Our objectives are to increase academics, increase graduation rate and post-secondary enrollment, and increase knowledge around financial literacy and the college admissions process.

You will see my program staff supporting teachers in the classroom, taking students on college tours, and hosting and supporting financial literacy and FAFSA nights for students and their families.

What Are Some Future Opportunities or Upcoming Initiatives That Excite You?

GEAR UP is hosting a STEAM Fest on March 4!  We plan on close to 2,000 students in attendance at the Kansas City Convention Center in downtown KC.  I’m excited to showcase STEAM related activities and careers that will spark interest and excitement in our students and teachers.

What About Working at a Mission-Driven Organization Like AAI Appeals to You?

Working for leaders that support you in ensuring our students get what they deserve appeals to me as well as working with colleagues that share the same passion and desire to see others succeed.  Our mission is to provide for communities that are often overlooked and offer them valuable resources that will enhance and support their future.
